Recap on our Sunday, 7/26/09, Young Artist Gathering! .. what you've been waiting for!

ATTENTION: all who have been waiting for the video and recap of the meeting.  No excuses here, but after extensive trial and error, we realized that Steven’s camera was BROKEN.  Therefore, here are bits and pieces of what we discussed. I tried my best to summarize so definitely comment when you have more to add! Also, shout out to Leslie Fitzwater for the thorough notes she took!

---We started with introductions – our name and “what we make.”  About 40 folks were there, including 6 “mentors.”

---I gave a shpiel on why we had gathered:  This is a community we want to stay in and/or come back to.  This is the community we want to protect and defend.  Let’s establish communication now between us and about this.

---Gracie then talked about new theatre companies started by some of our own (Look at previous post for more information).

Now the fun part……

QUESTION ONE the group discussed was: WHAT KIND OF COMMUNITY DO WE WANT TO GROW INTO AND UP IN?

The resounding answer was: the kind of community we’re lucky enough to have here in Milwaukee now!  You can’t replace people as if they were parts of a machine and expect to maintain community.  Our teachers are NOT replaceable.  They have led the way for us.  They have invested in us as people and artists.  We love them.  It is a characteristic of Milwaukee that there are genuine human relationships here in the artistic community that are precious and don’t always happen in other places.  Mature Milwaukee actors are known in other places.  And here, it is good to see outside people coming to perform, but it is also important that venues here be work places for great local talent.  We want to support a strong, human ethic.  There is a way to make a change without destroying what’s been built up before.  It’s about being respectful of the people in your working community.  If we in the Youth Forum know each other and cooperate with each other, there’s a better chance of a bright future here. Our interests are in common.

QUESTION TWO the group discussed was: HOW CAN WE LEARN ABOUT FACILITATING GOOD BUSINESS, BUDGET, ARTISTIC VISION, AND THE MESSAGE TOO?

It was said that we need both artistic quality and good management.  It’s not one against the other.  Artists and managers need to talk honestly and just more about what it takes to do their jobs.  On this question, Patrick Schley and Alan Piotrowicz had a lot to contribute.  But for the group as a whole, there was admission we just don’t know enough.  We need to listen more and seek out more resource people.  We need to study.

QUESTION THREE the group discussed was: WHAT CAN WE DO NOW TO HELP/HOW CAN WE FIND OUR OWN VOICE?

We can attend the Art’s Advocacy Breakfasts to help and to find our own voice. (Look at previous post for more information). Also, this blog can help us find our own voice.

---We ended with a “check-out”- how we were feeling at the end of the meeting. This was anything from “I feel like we accomplished something today” to “I’m hungry.”

NOW, let’s make sure that we continue talking. Comment, comment, comment away!! Yah!

Moments of today...

At least 33 people attended the meeting today, separated by varying backgrounds but unified under one goal: to discuss positive action concerning our future as Milwaukee artists. While we all anxiously wait for the videos to be posted, here are some quotes that sum up the day for all of us:

"I want to come back to the community I grew up in"
-Katherine Duffy

"Our teachers aren't replaceable"
-Erin Long

"[our mentors/teachers] helped me be the artist I am today, but more importantly they helped me be the person I am today"
- Elyse Edyleman

"They gave us confidence, we owe it to them"
-Chris Clowers

"[this issue] transcends the walls of institutions. Milwaukee is one of the few cities that's truly a community... that treats actors well."
-Alan Piotrowicz

"Let's make sure Milwaukee, Wisconsin remains on the map"
-Stacey Meyer

"It's not two teams against each other"
-Katherine Duffy

"So many people are so willing to give time and positive energy to fix this"
-Erin Long

"I received a lot of support from professionals in the community, that's the main reason why we're here"
-Alan Piotrowicz

"You are one of the most important factors in the whole equation"
-Norman Moses

"There can be no theatre without the business side of it... we're in this to tell stories, and we can't tell those stories without an audience, the management provides that opportunity... we can't blame it just on management."
-JJ Phillips

"It's a wake-up call, there's a lot that goes into maintaining a successful theatre community."
-JJ Phillips

"It's a theatre community, not just about one building"
-Eddie Crise

"I'm learning so much about the business aspect I never would have thought of"
-Gretchen Mahkorn

"I don't want to have to go to Chicago or New York because in Milwaukee actor's aren't treated well"
-Nathan Butchart

"We have a very nurturing community we can all tap back into"
-JJ Phillips

"An art gallery can take dead people and sell their art. A theater needs live artists."
-Colin Cabot

"There are all sorts of things beyond money we have to talk about"
-Colin Cabot

"Art thrives in controversy"
-Leslie Fitzwater

Today's Meeting

I think I speak for all who were there when I say today’s meeting was truly inspiring. We have a lot of footage of what went down, which will be posted HERE either late tonight or tomorrow. I could rehash all of the details now, but I think you should see it for yourself. I will say now that I am extraordinarily proud of the positive and constructive conversation we had today. When I say "Youth" you say "Quake!"

Much more very soon.

YOUTHQUAKE!

Here is an inaugural post, short and sweet. Please read the description of what we’re trying to create, above.

I know few will have a chance to see this before tomorrow’s meeting of young artists. For the record, here is the invitation that many of you received on Facebook and elsewhere:

ATTENTION: COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL ARTISTS WHO CARE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE ARTS IN MILWAUKEE.

For a month now we have watched and listened as our mentors and role models have bravely stood for their personal values and artistic principles. Their example has inspired us. We share their regard for the arts community in Milwaukee. A community which has fired in us a love of the work, a passion to improve, and an impulse to raise our voices for good. A community in which the talented professionals who are our teachers have truly cared about what we think and feel.

This kind of an environment doesn’t just happen. And it could easily be lost. It is time for us to take our part in the positive dialogue underway about the future of our arts community. This is not about tearing down. It’s about building up.

What kind of a community do we want to grow into and grow up in? How can we learn about facilitating good business, budget, artistic vision, and the message too? What can we do now to help? How can we find our own voice?

Please join us for a “meet and greet” and a discussion of all the above and more at Catalano Square near the BTC this Sunday, July 26, at 10:00 AM. (Catalano Square just seems to be the easiest place for us to meet). The idea is to start a forum for new artists and art lovers to share our thoughts, stay updated on events, and join together for positive action. And invite all your friends!

FOR THE MANY PEOPLE WHO’VE SAID THEY WANT TO BE THERE BUT CAN’T, WE WILL BE POSTING VIDEO OF THE MEETING.
